How to choose an AI tutor for your child
A practical guide to a small, supervised trial.
Choose one learning goal
Start with something observable: explaining a linear equation, understanding a paragraph or practising vocabulary. “Improve at school” is too broad to tell you whether a tool is helping.
Check access before creating an account
Read the provider’s age requirements, parental-permission rules and regional availability. Check your school’s guidance on AI-assisted work. A tool marketed for education is not automatically appropriate for every child or assignment.
Try it together
- Choose a short question with a known answer.
- Ask for a hint before asking for a full solution.
- Have your child explain the hint in their own words.
- Check the response against class notes or a trusted textbook.
- Try a similar problem with the tool closed.
Look beyond a convincing answer
Notice whether explanations match your child’s reading level, whether mistakes are corrected clearly and whether the child remains involved. If your child can copy the output but cannot explain it, adjust the activity or seek human help.
Check the practical details
- Can you manage the account and understand available supervision controls?
- What does the provider say about uploaded files, chat retention and deletion?
- Are text size, keyboard navigation and assistive technology usable for your child?
- What will you pay after any trial, and how do you cancel?
Avoid uploading names, school records or private information during a trial. Use an invented example or material you have permission to share.
